Here Comes A Big Black Cloud at Duckett’s (VIDEO)

Friday night, Stankhouse Records put together a showcase featuring Here Comes A Big Black Cloud, Tiny Knives, and Magic Johnson to celebrate the release of Tiny Knives’ new 7″.  Sadly, I had to work a double that night and totally missed the show.  Lame.  Thankfully, Bad Times Brandon was on hand to film the show and share it with the world.  The internet rules and so does Here Comes A Big Black Cloud.

Foot Ox's Last PDX Performance (VIDEO)

It’s true and very very sad.  Foot Ox played their last Portland show last night at The Camel House.  Teague is moving out east towards Athens?, I wish him luck.  There is rumor of Foot Ox reuniting for a tour this summer, which if true, would be faaaantastic.

Here is video of the entire show!  This is brought to you via the awesomely awesome “Bad Times” Brandon.  Brandon films a ton of PDX bands and post them to the web.  My hero!

Atomic Butter Babes: Live at Plan B (VIDEO)

Here is a video of the opening theme song of the Atomic Butter Babes‘ set with a heart warming introduction from hype-man Panama Montana. Once again, this wonderful video was brought to you via Chris Hackett a la Los Moustachios.

The ‘Babes are proudly & sophisticatedly theatric and hold themselves in high regard as fine-artists.

Atomic Butter Babes play next on February 20th at The Parlour as part of the first installment of the Useless State All-rAges Punk Show series. You can drink there (with ID), too. CRAAAZZZYY!!

The Taxpayers - February 6th!

The Taxpayers have a show this saturday in Vancouver!  This is their first show since they’ve returned from tour.  The show is being put together by Fort Albert Music.

This apparently will be filmed and recorded.  Neato.

Northwest Punk Vol 1

Northwest Punk is “a video fanzine dedicated to highlighting some of the best new punk music in the Pacific Northwest” and it’s brand new!  The first volume features USR allies and great friends, Tiny Knives, as well as other PDX stalwarts: White Fang, Purple Rhinestone Eagle, JonnyX and the Groadies, and Magic Johnson.

“This is a pretty rough edit, but I’ve been wanting to get it out soon… if you have any suggestions, or would like to help in the future, contact britestreet@hotmail.com

I look forward to more installments of Northwest Punk and perhaps some USR bands might find their way on it? hmm?

Stumptown Underground Release slumberPARTY!

Stumptown Underground is celebrating their 5th release at Cosmic Monkey Comics this Saturday!  The event will be 5-7 pm and attendees are encouraged to wear their pajamas.  Why?  Cause this release is titled: “Slumber Party”!  I expect there to be some zinester pillow fights, eyeglasses and notebooks flying everywhere.  It’ll be great!

I encourage you to come out and support Stumptown Underground and hang out at a really awesome comic shop.

About the artists in the Califuckyeah Comp

Track listings and info on the bands:
These dudes play some pretty awesome catchy pop punk and hail from the sunny desert city of La Quinta, CA.  We played with these guys in LA at Dig In! and it was awesome!  Everyone was boppin around and  having a great time.  They’re going on tour this summer, I believe?  If you like this song, you can download an entire EP for free on the net!
Alright.  This band fucking rules.  I wish I could post their entire EP, it’s fantastic!  We played with MMM at a pretty empty Gilman benefit show, but it was a dream come true nonetheless.  Playing the Gilman!!! Unfortunately, we weren’t able to make acquaintances that night, but they left behind a grip of free EPs.  I took the leisure to snag one out of curiosity and played it in the car en route to the Tenderloin district to crash at our buddy Colin’s apartment.  Holy smokes!  Manhattan Murder Mystery rules!  Fell in love instantly.  Catch ‘em if you’re ever in LA or if they come to your town.
Skye is a fantastic person!  I met Skye over the net and exchanged a few letters with him.  When we decided to go on our California tour, we made sure to add Reno, NV to play a show together on my 26th birthday (best birthday ever) at The Xeno House.  He does a lot awesome things for his scene.  He’s gonna be traveling this summer, so help a brother out!
Okay, I cheated with this one.  We didn’t actually play with Hundreds and Thousands on tour but I really want to include them on this comp.  Why?  First, they’re awesome.  Hauntingly driving and they draw influence from a few of my favorite bands.  Second, Noah “fucking” Wolf is in the band!  Noah helps run Dig In!, a new awesome all-ages venue in LA. He also has a new band that’s just as awesome: Wreck of The Zephyr.  Noah has an awesome beard and dog, too.
Twenty Hands High are amazing folks that we had the pleasure to have played with twice on tour and hang out at three different shows!  They hosted The Taxpayers in Santa Barbara, where we had one of wildest nights on tour to date (whoa).  XHH are some of my new favorite people and I really dig their stuff.  They’re going on tour this summer and you should definitely help them out or catch em live!
  • 6.) “Everyone Finds God (After The Next Beer)” by Avian Orphans
Avian Orphans played with us at The Xeno House show in Reno.  Jake and Ally hung out with us later that night and we all created a ruckus at The Golden Nugget.  Reno rules.  Jake has some funny stories of when he worked at a public access television station and the ridiculous security guards at the high school he attended.
This is a live recording from our tour kickoff show taken with a new handy-dandy field recorder I just bought.  I am gonna start bootlegging shows and posting them on the page.  This thing rules.
  • 8.) “Environmental Racism” by Eskera
Eskera rock!  We played shows together twice, once in PDX and once in San Diego.  Both shows have been awesome.  This is some pretty “punk” fucking music, I like it!  Next time we’re in SoCal we’re going to TJ together and I’m really looking forward to it!  These guys are a lot of fun.  Eskera also have an entire free EP download available on their myspace.  Check it out, great stuff!
Nate and Tessa are some of our favorite people.  Being from Portland too, we’ve played quite a few shows together.  On tour we played the Retox Lounge  (in San Fran) together along with The Funyons (hecks yeah!) to a bunch of Hell’s Angels.  It was sorta weird.  We had a great time anyway and it was the first time we’d seen each other in 6 months (Destroy Nate Allen tour like crazy!).
I hope you enjoy these tunes!  The DIY community has a lot of great people involved and I keep falling in love with punk rock every tour.  I hope to keep compiling tour comps and posting them on USR for download.  There is so much music to share!  I love it!  Wordpress is pissing me off…

Suck My Flick - January Edition!

You like short films? You make short films? You like to hate short films publicly?

GREAT! Then I’ve got something for you! It’s called “Suck My Flick” and it’s PDX’s premiere independent short film night. And it’s FREE!!! (which USR loves!)

Why is “Suck My Flick” so great? Well, a bunch of reasons really. My favorite reason being is the 10-minute cap-off on the submitted films, which if you’ve been to as many film nights as I have, is the best news ever! Suck My Flick will not feature 20 minute pretentious, boring art films about wanking off or the Avian Bird Flu (or whatever, jesus!). Stupendous! And you can win a unicorn trophy this month! Keeps getting better and better!

For more info on how to submit and Suck My Flick itself, check out the page on Portlandfilm.org!

I’ll be there showing some films, too!  (Los Moustachios have a new film we’re screening, more info on that later in the the week).  Look for the handsome fella with a beard in the back, taking submissions, and indulging on free drinks.  Say “hello!”

Life is good.

USR Califuckyeah Tour Comp (FREE DOWNLOAD!)

Well-al-fucking-right! It’s finally done, I did it! I finished putting together the Califuckyeah Comp. After my network card got fried in a power-surge and overcoming network sharing issues, USR has brought you a neat little 9-song comp for you to enjoy. FOR FREE!!!

All of the bands that are featured on this compilation are bands that The Taxpayers played with on their Califuckyeah Tour of winter 2009. Its a neat little mix, a bit of everything. I like it!
