The boys and girls of Lee Corey Oswald have managed yet again to
strike a blow to the confabulated world of underground music. Like
a drunken fireworks show they've taken the orchestrated and
calculated tinges of traditional folk music to heart, all the while
exploding with the passion and abrasive outcries of confusion and
powerful emotion found in punk rock.
Don't get me wrong, these songs aren't throaty curses of
damnation thrown to the powers that be by some under-informed
crusties hopping trains with nicer cell phones than you or I.
Shit's the real deal yo. The waltzy beat and airy backing vocals
(made all the more layered and sweet by newest member Taylor
Shultz) provide a smooth sobriety to the urgency and fervent
attitude of "Dependency Generation." "These Four Walls" struck me
for its arrangement and meticulous harmonies. Any folk song that
can pull off such hooks and soul slaying distorted guitar riffs
simultaneously is worth a listen.
Closing out the trio of awesome is "Rocks for a Mouth." It's an
x-mas song. It's an incredible x-mas song complete with lyrical and
clarinet driven nods to traditional x-mas songs. The song stirs
within the emotional weight normally associated with the holidays.
Brushing on religious themes it uses the holiday medium to paint an
honest and thought provoking picture. Give this release a listen
